Guide cover: How to recover deleted photos from your phone: where to look and how long you have

To recover deleted photos from your phone, check the trash of the app they were in: the Recently Deleted album on iPhone, the Trash in Google Photos on Android, or the Recycle bin in Samsung's Gallery app. According to the official help pages, these keep a deleted photo for 30 days. After that, Apple and Google say it is permanently deleted and can't be restored. If the photo was backed up, check the cloud too.

Start today: the clock runs from the day the photo was deleted, not the day you noticed it was gone. Time limits and menu names change with each software version. The details below come from official help pages read in October 2026.

Where was the photo? A decision table

The right place to look depends on where the photo lived when it was deleted. The table shows where to look and how long you have.

Where the photo wasWhere to lookTime limit
iPhone, deleted in the Photos appThe Recently Deleted album in Photos. Also iCloud.com, if you use iCloud Photos30 days
Android, with Google PhotosThe Google Photos app, Collections, then Trash30 days (older guides say 60 days for backed-up items)
Samsung Galaxy, deleted in GalleryGallery, Menu, then Recycle bin, if it was turned on30 days

iPhone: the Recently Deleted album

According to Apple, a photo or video you delete goes to the Recently Deleted album and stays there for 30 days. After 30 days it is permanently deleted and you can't get it back.

  1. Open the Photos app, swipe up to the Utilities section, tap Recently Deleted, then tap View Album.
  2. Unlock the album with Face ID or Touch ID. By default, Apple requires this for iOS 16 and later.
  3. Tap the photo, then tap Recover. For several at once, tap Select, choose them, tap the More button, then tap Recover. Expected result: the photo returns to your library.

From a computer, sign in at iCloud.com with your Apple Account, click Photos and select Recently Deleted in the sidebar.

Two cautions. With iCloud Photos on, deleting a photo on one device deletes it on the others signed in to the same Apple Account, and deleting from inside Recently Deleted is final. On iOS 18 or later, Apple also describes a Recovered album in Utilities, which shows photos and videos that are on the device but outside the library. It only appears if the iPhone finds any.

Android: the Google Photos trash

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. At the bottom, tap Collections, then Trash. The name and path can vary by app version.
  3. Touch and hold the photo, then tap Restore. Expected result: per Google, the item returns to the albums it was in, to your Google Photos library and to your phone's gallery app.

Google's help page says items in the trash are permanently deleted after 30 days, and that emptying the trash is permanent. In September 2026 Google cut the trash window for backed-up items from 60 days to 30, according to Android Authority. Translated help pages and older guides may still show 60, so check the limit in the app itself.

If the photo isn't in the trash, Google says it may be permanently deleted. Before giving up, check whether it was archived (archived items can be unarchived) and whether you are signed in to the Google Account used for the backup, which Samsung's page also suggests when photos seem to be missing.

On Samsung's support page, the path is: open Gallery, tap Menu, then Recycle bin, tap Edit, select the photos and tap Restore. Deleted photos and videos stay for 30 days. Samsung's Brazilian pages say to turn the bin on in Gallery settings beforehand, so if it was off when you deleted the photo, it won't be there.

A recent change can make photos look like they disappeared. Microsoft says that starting September 30, 2026, Samsung Gallery no longer syncs directly with OneDrive. Photos already in OneDrive are not deleted and stay available in the OneDrive app and on onedrive.com, but they no longer appear in Gallery. If you used that sync, look in OneDrive before assuming they were deleted.

For items deleted from OneDrive itself, Microsoft says you can restore files deleted within the last 30 days on personal accounts, or 93 days on work or school accounts unless an administrator changed it. On onedrive.com, open the Recycle bin, select the items and choose Restore. Items removed from the Recycle bin can't be restored.

WhatsApp and other apps

If the photo came in a message, Samsung's support page suggests checking WhatsApp or Telegram and the image, download and video folders in your file manager. The sender may also still have a copy, so ask them to resend it. WhatsApp has its own backup rules, which change, so this guide does not promise that deleted media can be restored that way. Before reinstalling the app or restoring a backup, read what it includes in WhatsApp's Help Center.

What to do right now to avoid making it worse

None of the official pages consulted gives a procedure for preserving the phone, so this is general caution:

Paid recovery apps: when they won't help and the privacy risks

Inside the time limit you don't need an app: the trash is free and official. Outside it, Apple and Google say the item can't be restored, and none of the pages consulted describes a method. Android's documentation doesn't cover deleted photos, but it says devices launching with Android 10 or later are required to use file-based encryption, with different keys for different files. That tends to make life harder for programs that scan storage for deleted files, and it is a good reason to doubt any promise of guaranteed recovery. A memory card is a separate case: Google acknowledges deleted photos may stay on a removable card, with no guarantee.

The privacy risk is real, because to look for photos an app needs access to them. Google's Android help lists permissions such as photos and videos and access to all files. Grant only what the app needs, and review it afterward.

How to avoid this next time

Syncing is not backing up. Google says deleting from the Google Photos app also deletes the item from your device, and Apple says that with iCloud Photos a deletion applies to every device on the account.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recover permanently deleted photos?

According to Apple and Google, no: once the trash window ends, the item is permanently deleted. What's left is a copy in a backup, on a computer or with whoever received the photo. A memory card is a separate case.

How long do deleted photos stay in the trash on a phone?

30 days in the iPhone's Recently Deleted album, in the Google Photos trash and in the Samsung Gallery Recycle bin. In OneDrive it is 30 days on a personal account and 93 on a work or school account. Check the limit in the app, because it changes.

Do photo recovery apps work?

Inside the time limit you don't need them, and outside it there is no guarantee. They ask for access to your photos and files, so use only your official app store, review permissions and never share your account password.

My photos vanished from Samsung Gallery. Were they deleted?

Not necessarily. Gallery sync with OneDrive ended on September 30, 2026, so synced photos no longer show in Gallery but are still in OneDrive. Also check the Gallery Recycle bin and Google Photos.
